South Rim
When planning a backcountry trip it is desirable to schedule at least two nights in the canyon. This allows a rest and recovery day before the hike out, and/or reduces the distance to be covered each day. Hikers should consider elevation gain and loss, not just mileage, when researching possible itineraries.
Permit Information
Permits are required for all overnight hikes, and must be obtained in person (Backcountry Office, Grand Canyon Village Loop Rd.) or by written request before you come. Advance reservations are strongly recommended.
Directions
South Rim is located 60 miles north of Williams, Arizona (via Route 64 from Interstate 40) and 80 miles northwest of Flagstaff (via Route 180).
Information Center
The main park visitor center (South Rim) is located just east of Grand Canyon Village, about 6 miles north of the south entrance station.
