The Fort Pierre National Grassland lies in central South Dakota southwest of the Missouri River. The 116,000 acre Grassland northern edge is five miles south of the state capital, Pierre, and the small ranch community of Ft. Pierre. The Grassland is intermingled with private rangeland and fields of wheat, sorghum, and occasionally, sunflowers.
