Permits
No backcountry permit needed. Free Campfire Permit required for any type of fire or backpacking stove outside a developed campground or picnic area, from any Forest Service office. Self-issued permits, at trailheads, are required to enter the Cucamonga and Sheep Mountain Wilderness Areas; not necessary for the San Gabriel Wilderness.
Visitors Center and Programs
Visitor Center: Chilao Visitor Center is located on State Highway 2, about 27 miles north of the city of La Canada, CA (off Interstate 210). Exhibits range from Native American history, to the importance of forests and how they develop and are managed. Grassy Hollow Visitor Center is located on Highway 2, 6 miles west of the town of Wrightwood, CA. Exhibits tell the story of this rugged, wind-swept area. Mt. Baldy Schoolhouse Visitor Center is located in Mt. Baldy Village, CA. Exhibits cover the early days of this historic schoolhouse as well as natural regional history.
Food Supplies and Concessions
Food/Supplies: Restaurants and stores are scattered in various cities/communities throughout the Forest.
Concessions: There are many concessionaires. Please contact one of the District Offices for vendor information.
Visitor Impact
Pets are welcome in the Angeles National Forest, but must be kept on a leash (no longer than 6 feet) at all times.
During lightning storms, avoid open areas such as meadows, ridges, and mountain tops, and to stay away from isolated trees.
Stream flows will be high and swift following rainstorms and during the snowmelt runoff in early summer. Stream crossings can be hazardous.
Altitude sickness may occur if you overexert at high elevations where oxygen supply is reduced. Beware of hypothermia. Treat or boil all surface water.
