Permits
Groups of ten or more persons or stays of more than three days in one place require a permit from the New York State Forest Ranger responsible for the area.

Visitors Center and Programs
Visitor Center: The center in Paul Smiths is on Rt. 30, 12 miles north of Saranac Lake, phone: 518-327-3000; the center in Newcomb is located on Rt. 28N, 14 miles east of Long Lake, phone: 518-582-2000. Both are open daily from 9 am to 5 pm year-round.

Programs: Exhibits on natural history, presentations, more than 150 public programs annually, including lectures on bear behavior, orienteering classes, maple sugaring outings, interpretive walks, and more.
