Open year-round.

Visitation
Highest: spring-fall.

Permits
No backcountry permit needed. Rafting permits are required from May 15 to July 31 on the Selway River. Call the West Fork Ranger District at 406-821-3269 for information and reservations.

Visitors Center and Programs
Visitor Center: The Darby Historic Visitor Center is located in Darby off of U.S. 93 and is open seasonally June to September.

Food Supplies and Concessions
Food/Supplies: Restaurants and stores can be found in cities throughout the Bitterroot Forest along U.S. 93.

Concessions: Outfitters and guides operate on Bitterroot National Forest land, providing boating, fishing, hunting and recreation opportunities. Contact Forest Offices for more information.

Visitor Impact
Snakes: There are rattlesnakes at the Salmon and Selway Rivers, and in the Sapphire Mountains. Be careful in areas with foliage, or near ledges when in rocky country.

Woodticks: The tick season is from late March to early July (varies with elevation). Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Colorado Tick Fever are carried by some of the ticks. Consult a doctor immediately if a flu-like, moderately severe illness occurs after finding a tick on your body.

Drinking Water: Water quality is high, but giardia has been detected. Water may not be available on ridgetop trails and in late summer.
