Permits
No permit is needed for backcountry camping along the 31 miles of the Florida Trail which run through the preserve.
A yearly fee of $35 is charged for offroad vehicle permits at the Visitor Center.
Visitors Center and Programs
Visitor Center: The visitor center is located on Tamiami Trail (U.S.41) about halfway between Naples and Miami. It offers a 15-minute movie about the preserve, a wildlife exhibit, and book sales.
Programs: During the winter season the preserve offers scheduled ranger-led "wet walks," canoe trips, bicycle tours, and campfire programs at the campgrounds. Environmental education programs and special group tours may be arranged.
Food Supplies and Concessions
Food/Supplies: There are no food, supplies, or gasoline within the preserve. Restaurants and convenience stores are available in nearby Everglades City and Ochopee.
Concessions: Book sales in the visitor center are managed by the Florida National Parks and Monument Association.
Visitor Impact
Bicycles are allowed on all roads, and on some of the improved trails on Bear Island.
Additional Information
Much of the preserve is flooded throughout the summer wet season. Various campgrounds and other visitor facilities may be closed seasonally due to water levels and other resource concerns; call the park for current updates.
