Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Operating Hours
Open year-round.

Visitation
Highest June-August, and for fall colors in October. Lowest Nov.-Feb.

Permits
Free backcountry permits are required for overnight trips. Permits are available at most campgrounds (24 hrs.), ranger stations (24 hrs.), and at the Sugarlands and Oconaluftee Visitor Centers (9 am to 5 pm).

Visitors Center and Programs
Visitor Center: The visitor centers at Sugarlands and Oconaluftee are open all year, except on Christmas Day. The Cades Cove Visitor Center has limited winter hours.

Programs: During the summer and fall, the park provides regularly scheduled ranger-led interpretive walks and talks, slide presentations, and campfire programs at campgrounds and visitor centers.

Food Supplies and Concessions
Food/Supplies: There are no food facilities within the park, but there are numerous convenience stores and restaurants in nearby communities.

Concessions: Horse rentals are available seasonally from five local stables.

Visitor Impact
The two main park roads close during hazardous winter weather conditions. It is strongly recommended that valuables not be left in your car.

Additional Information
A $.25 copy of the park newspaper, the Smokies Guide, is helpful for trip planning. It is available from visitor centers and campgrounds throughout the park.
