Gates of the Arctic National Park

Operating Hours
Open year-round. Ranger station hours vary with the season.

Visitation
Highest mid-May to mid-September.

Permits
The park has a required backcountry orientation program at Bettles Ranger Station, Coldfoot Visitor Center, and Anaktuvuk Pass Ranger Station. If not passing through one of these locations, contact the Bettles Ranger Station prior to your visit.

Visitors Center and Programs
Visitor Center: The Anaktuvuk Pass Ranger Station, Bettles Ranger Station, and Coldfoot Visitor Center each have backcountry orientation displays.

Programs: The Coldfoot Visitor Center has evening interpretive programs daily during the summer. The Bettles Ranger Station offers interpretive programs year-round on an appointment basis.

Food Supplies and Concessions
Food/Supplies: Supplies are generally not available within the park. Visitors must plan to be self-sufficient.

Concessions: The following concessions are available within the park: air taxi, hiking guide service, mountaineering guide service, flightseeing, hunting guide service, photography guide service, backpacking guide service, lake touring guide service, river trip guide service, dog sled tours, big game transporter, and sportfishing guide service.

Visitor Impact
Be aware of vulnerable areas when selecting campsites. Gravel and sand bars offer ideal campsites; they afford breezes which deter insects and allow optimal views, thus discouraging surprise encounters with wildlife. These sites flood during high water each spring, washing away most signs of impact. Fires should be used only when regulations permit and, if possible, kept on river bars below the high water line.

Take your time while backcountry hiking: do not try to squeeze a 21-day arctic trip into a 14-day "Lower 48" trip.

Additional Information
There are no roads or established trails within the Gates of the Arctic.

The remote location and extreme climate of the Brooks Range requires travelers to have strong wilderness skills and flexibility to adjust plans. The Dalton Highway offers a road-accessible Brooks Range experience for those not prepared for a rugged wilderness journey.
