Aiken Canyon

Over one hundred varying bird species inhabit the Aiken Canyon. There are a variety of songbirds including the blue-gray gnatcatcher, western bluebird, scrub jay, Virginia's warbler, rufous-sided towhee, and black-headed grosbeak. At the far northern side of the canyon, you may see roadrunners, Pinyon jay and plain titmouse.

Golden Eagles inhabit the canyon as well as prairie and peregrine falcon. Cooper's and red-tailed hawks can be found sitting motionless on fence posts or in oak trees.

The rare Mexican spotted owl can be found in the deep timber areas of the preserve. There are only 40 of these endangered species left in Colorado.
