Carrizo Plain Natural Area

The CPNA is a unique and diverse area influenced by the San Joaquin Valley on the east and the coast ranges on the west. It is a 250,000 acre area that remains open and relatively free of human alteration. It supports some of the most robust populations of many endangered, threatened and rare plant and animal species in the state of California while providing a beautiful backdrop for viewing other species in their natural habitats.

The history of the CPNA lies hidden in its hills, canyons and valleys. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the Carrizo Plain was home to the Chumash and Yokuts peoples. Evidence of their existence can still be observed in rock paintings and bedrock mortar milling features located within the CPNA. Across the landscape can be seen small buildings, groups of trees or rusty pipes and machinery; all that remains of the past associated with farming, ranching and mining that took place during the late 19th and into the 20th century.

The San Andreas Fault, at the base of the Temblor mountains, is the reason many students and visitors from around the world come to the CPNA. The fault zone has many classic features that are readily visible, even to the amateur geologist.

The CPNA is a powerful yet peaceful landscape of earth and sky. From the tiny fairy shrimp to the massive San Andreas Fault, you're invited to come and explore this dynamic area where you will discover that: "The closer you look , the more you see".
