Assateague Island National Seashore
Camping is only available in the Maryland portion of the Seashore. National seashore campers may reserve up to eight weeks in advance by calling BIOSPHERICS at 1-800-365-2267. Backcountry campers must obtain a $5 permit upon arrival. For Maryland departures, obtain permits at the Ranger Station. For Virginia departures, obtain permits at the Toms Cove Visitor Center. There are two drive-in campgrounds. There are also 2 oceanside (open year-round) and 4 bayside backcountry sites. Pope Shade is closed during Assateague's shotgun and blackpowder deer hunting seasons.
