Birds and Waterfowl
The multitude of birds found on Assateague Island is, at times, truly spectacular; nearly 300 species have been tabulated.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge
This wildlife refuge is located within the National Seashore in the southern half of the island.

Wild Horses
Despite the often told tale of the horses swimming to Assateague from a shipwrecked Spanish galleon, the horses were actually brought over by boat in the late 17th century to avoid fencing and taxation laws.
