Green Mountain National Forest

Black bear
Because Vermont's 2,000 black bears are shy animals that spend the winter hibernating under brush piles, inside hollow trees, beneath tock and overhangs, you may not see one. They require home ranges of about 5 square miles to meet food and shelter needs.

Migrating birds
Nearly 100 species of neotropical birds migrate here from South America each spring to breed. They return to the tropics each fall to avoid the harsh northern winter.
